My studio based practice encompasses painting, drawing, digital printing and found material. My work analytically engages with the cultural history of abstraction while alluding to semiotics, industrial design, and pop art. I am interested in the rich history of painting and what it proposes with its complex ties to modernism.
As a point of departure, I approach history from a perspective that it is permeable rather than a sacred untouchable line of events. With this in mind, I draw attention to areas that have fallen out of focus or perhaps overlooked. My recent paintings have explored the iconic Boeing 747 airplane and its sudden and unnoticed retirement in 2020. This was brought forward due to the grounding of aircraft during the Covid-19 pandemic.
I utilise and conflate a range of distinct sources to interfere and offer alternative readings. This instigates a discourse surrounding the re-examining and understanding of historical events. This can touch upon how we interpret the original source and its affiliation to design, technology and politics.
